Exploring the Eternal Mystical Truths.”
Mary Magdalene is not only the ultimate Gnostic symbol representing the
quest for Gnosis (just as the Christ is Gnosis itself), she is flesh and
blood: as teacher, philosopher, traveler, and companion to Jesus.
The word
Gnosis is Greek for "knowledge" - but not any kind of
knowledge. Gnosis is knowledge of the divine. In the East, divine
knowing is called God-consciousness, Bliss, "Moksha,” or enlightenment.
In the West, though such knowledge has long been discouraged—even
worse, it has been denied—it too has a hallowed tradition.

Phil Gruber Lecture: Mary Magdalene and the Children

through which a sacred bloodline, or bloodlines ensued. Are these bloodlines

Siobhán Houston Lecture: Gnostic Visions
of Mary Magdalene
While Mary Magdalene’s relationship with Jesus is now debated widely,
some early Christian sects went much deeper in their understanding of
the Magdalene’s unique position. They envisioned her as “Christ
the Sophia,” the spiritual co-equal of Jesus and a teacher of the
highest order. Because heterodox Christians have been zealously persecuted
over the centuries, this notion has remained for the most part concealed.
It is documented, however, in some of the ancient and recently discovered
“Gnostic gospels.” Looking at texts like The Gospel of Mary
of Magdala and the teachings of Sophian Gnosticism, Siobhán Houston
will explore the radical ways in which these mystics envisioned the Magdalene
and her role in the cosmic drama of enlightenment and restoration.
| Siobhán (pronounced shi-VAHN) Houston is the author of Invoking Mary Magdalene: Accessing the Wisdom of the Divine Feminine (Sounds True, 2006). She graduated from Harvard Divinity School in 1995 and currently is a doctoral candidate in religious studies at the University of Exeter in Britain. A longtime practitioner of the Western mysteries, she has written widely on contemporary religious issues for numerous national magazines, including GNOSIS: A Journal of the Western Inner Traditions and Parabola.
