Mary Magdalene, the star of the ‘forbidden’ or Gnostic Gospels is barely mentioned in the New Testament. Her significance and true status has long been deliberately covered up by the male-dominated Catholic Church. In obscuring and maligning her as a prostitute these men were effectively insulting Christ himself, who declared that her name would be celebrated throughout Christendom. Reacting against her by rewriting her life and influence, they reduced her power as a potent and conscious symbol of the Sacred Feminine. By demeaning any women who would emulate her, abuse was carried on against women and children for generations. It is a huge irony that even as a negative image, Mary Magdalene has become the most important woman in history – and today, she is making a comeback, to the terror of those who would still see her and all women as degraded.

Siobhán Houston: Gnostic Visions of Mary Magdalene
While Mary Magdalene’s relationship with Jesus is now debated widely, some early Christian sects went much deeper in their understanding of the Magdalene’s unique position. They envisioned her as “Christ the Sophia,” the spiritual co-equal of Jesus and a teacher of the highest order. Because heterodox Christians have been zealously persecuted over the centuries, this notion has remained for the most part concealed. It is documented, however, in some of the ancient and recently discovered “Gnostic gospels.” Looking at texts like The Gospel of Mary of Magdala and the teachings of Sophian Gnosticism, Siobhán Houston will explore the radical ways in which these mystics envisioned the Magdalene and her role in the cosmic drama of enlightenment and restoration.

Siobhán Houston (pronounced shi-VAHN), is the author of Invoking Mary Magdalene: Accessing the Wisdom of the Divine Feminine (Sounds True, 2006). She graduated from Harvard Divinity School in 1995 and currently is a doctoral candidate in religious studies at the University of Exeter in Exeter, England.
